The European hornet is a wasp-like shaped insect with yellow abdominal stripes on a brown body. The robust European hornet is much larger than the yellow jacket and can range in size from ¾ inch to 1 and ½ inches in length. One distinct difference from other stinging insects, the European hornet is known to be quite active at night.

Understanding the habits of the European hornet will help identify why they are creating a problem around your property. Brightly lit windows and outside lights will certainly attract these night-time flying insects. They are also attracted to fruit and tree sap. The European hornet likes hollow trees, barns and other outbuildings in which to build their nests. They will also target attics and hollow walls of houses. Being well lit up at night, having an abundance of fruit, and a great selection of nesting sites, will aid in developing a hornet problem.

Are they dangerous?

The stinger of a European hornet is void of barbs allowing them to sting multiple times with their smooth stinger. They also carry venom, causing the sting which may swell and itch. Many people are susceptible to allergic reactions from the venom.

In addition to physical harm, the European hornet can cause considerable damage to trees and shrubs. They will strip the bark from such to get to the sap. The bark fibre is also desirable material for which to build their nests

Asian Hornet

The Asian hornet is a species of hornet which is not native to the UK. It is smaller than our native hornet poses no greater risk to human health than other hornets or bees.

Asia Hornet pose a risk to honeybees and pollinating insects. Therefore, we are keen to stop this invasive insect establishing in the UK and why you should report suspected sightings.

There have also been reports in other countries of Asian hornets becoming aggressive when their nests are disturbed. If you find a nest, don’t try to remove it yourself – it can be dangerous and should only be done by experts.

When a sighting is confirmed, experts from the National Bee Unit (NBU) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) will work quickly to find and destroy any active nests in the area.
